Maria Cristina Falls, standing at 98 meters (321.5 feet), is the most iconic landmark of Iligan City, the “City of Majestic Waterfalls.” Often called the “Twin Falls,” its flow is uniquely split by a large rock at the brink. Beyond its beauty, it is a powerhouse generating approximately 70% of Mindanao’s electricity via the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant.
As of late 2025 and entering 2026, Maria Cristina Falls has officially reopened after a lengthy three-year closure due to landslides. However, entry is currently strictly regulated to ensure visitor safety:
No Walk-ins: You cannot simply show up at the gate.
Permit Required: Visitors must send a formal letter of request to the Iligan City Tourism Office and sign a waiver.
Limited Slots: Currently, only 10 persons per day are allowed entry.
Vehicle Requirement: Visitors must provide their own vehicle for entry into the NPC (National Power Corporation) complex.
Because the falls are used for hydroelectric power, 90% of the water is often diverted to turbines.
The Full Flow: To see the legendary “Twin Falls” in their full glory, visit on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays at 11:00 AM. This is when the plant typically conducts a “special release” for tourists.
Weekdays: You will still see the falls, but the flow may be significantly thinner as the power plant is in full operation.
Entrance Fee: ₱50.00 (Adults) / ₱35.00 (Seniors & Kids).
Operating Hours: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Monday–Friday limited to approved requests).
Location: Barangay Maria Cristina, roughly 9.3 km (20 minutes) from Iligan City proper.
Most travelers use Cagayan de Oro (CGY) as their entry point.
From Laguindingan Airport: Take a van or bus (Super 5 or Rural Transit) bound for Iligan City (approx. 1.5–2 hours).
From Iligan City Proper: Ride a jeepney labeled “Buru-un” from the city terminal.
The Drop-off: Ask to be dropped at the “NPC Entrance” or “Agus 6/7 Bridge.”
Note for 2026: Since the current policy requires a private vehicle for entry into the complex, it is highly recommended to rent a van or a taxi from the city center rather than taking a jeepney.
The falls are located within a protected eco-park managed by the National Power Corporation. While some areas are still undergoing rehabilitation, the park typically offers:
Viewing Deck: A safe, multi-level platform for the best photos of the falls.
Canopy Walk & Zip Line: For a thrill, you can zip across the Agus River with the falls in the background (check availability locally as these reopen in phases).
Botanical Garden: A quiet area featuring local flora and a small orchidarium.
Weather and access policies change. Confirm permits with local offices and hire accredited guidebooks. Pack out trash and respect community rules and protected areas.
